Es gibt viele Gründe, warum ein Film schief gehen kann, aber auch viele Möglichkeiten, solche Fehler auszubügeln: Eine herausragende Inszenierung mag über manche Schauspielerschwächen hinwegtäuschen, fähige Darsteller wiederum lassen auch schlechte Filmtricks durchgehen. Eines jedoch braucht eigentlich jeder gelungene Film: ein gutes Drehbuch.
Wie aber sieht eine solche Filmvorlage aus? Als Drehbuchautor gilt es zunächst einige Grundlagen zu kennen, und von diesen berichtet Robert McKee. Er möchte Prinzipien des Drehbuchschreibens aufzeigen, keine Regeln („Es funktioniert schon lange so“-Hinweise anstatt dogmatischer „Man muss es so machen“-Vorgaben). Und er versucht seinen Lesern fundierte Kenntnisse zu vermitteln, in eine Lehre zum Schnellschreiber geht bei ihm niemand.
Den Kern der Sache verdeutlicht schon sein Buchtitel: „Eine gute Story macht einen guten Film möglich, während eine Geschichte, die nicht funktioniert, praktisch eine Katastrophe garantiert“, hält McKee all jenen Autoren entgegen, die mit miesen Geschichten Erfolg suchen. Wer jedoch „die Kunst der Geschichte“ wirklich beherrschen will, der sollte McKees Vorschläge studieren.
Anhand von vornehmlich am modernen US-Film ausgerichteten Beispielen erklärt sein Buch die Strukturen und Genres einer Filmstory, ihre Festlegung in Raum und Zeit, den Umgang mit ihren Figuren. Mit Kenntnis dieser Elemente gilt es sodann eine Geschichte zu „designen“. Auch hier gibt McKee Tipps zu Handlungs- und Szenenaufbau oder dramaturgischer Konzeption. Und er empfiehlt bestimmte schriftstellerische Arbeitsweisen.
McKee räumt mit dem Vorurteil auf, Hollywoods Produzenten würden das Talent der meisten Autoren schlicht verkennen. Er kontert: Wer eine gute Geschichte gekonnt erzählt, verkauft diese auch. Das Rüstzeug hierzu liefert sein Buch, die Kreativität muss dann jeder Autor selbst noch beisteuern. –Joachim Hohwieler
